FIBA Rule Changes for 2024

From Steve Wilkie, OABO Provincial Interpreter…

This year’s rule changes by FIBA have been released and I have had the chance to review the changes.  While FIBA has only released the updated rule book thus far, Official interpretations will not be available until sometime this month.  I did want to get these out to you for the start of the season.  I would like you to begin using these rules for High School Games at the start of the season.  Keeping in mind that if your local schools used the OFSAA Shot Clock modification that will still be in place for this year.

Within this email the copy of the Rule Changes Summery and the Official FIBA Rule Manual are included. Once the official Rule Interpretations are available, I will be sure to send them out right away.

Rule Changes

Back Court Throw in under 2 minutes and offensive team calls a time out.

If the coach decides to advance the ball to the front court the ball will stay on the same side of the court (table-side or opposite)  as to where the throw in was to take place in the back court.

If the time out was after the made basket the coach will have the option when advancing the ball to what side the ball will come in on (table side or opposite)

Correctable Errors

This change brings clarity and consistency to when correctable errors can be fixed

The biggest change in this rule change is when things can be fixed and when they can not.

The timing for any of the error listed in the Category 1 of Correctable Errors must be identified within specific timelines.

  • Any Correctable error that has occurred prior to the 2:00 mark of the 4th quarter must be identified and addressed prior to the resumption of play after first stoppage by the referees.
  • Any Correctable error that has occurred after the 2:00 mark of the 4th quarter must be identified and addressed prior to the resumption of the next stoppage of play by the referees.  If the error occurred and there is no stoppage it would be addressed at the end of the period.

New Mechanic

With the player in the act of shooting and being fouled.  If this player decides to make a pass off, we now have a mechanic that can be used to report this as the reason for the throw in and not a shooting foul.  This would be uses right at the spot of the foul.

If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.
